Anchovies

In recent weeks, the harbor has experienced an unseasonably large influx of baitfish, which appear to be primarily anchovies. When large schools of fish inundate the harbor, typically between June and October, it can reduce oxygen levels to a point where fish populations become stressed or die-off en masse. This has occurred several times in the harbor’s history, with the last large-scale die-off occurring in October 2024.

Harbor staff is actively monitoring the abundance of fish and utilizing specialized equipment to measure levels of remaining dissolve oxygen. Typically, the Port District’s aerator system would be deployed to help prevent oxygen levels from dipping dangerously low, but after running continuously for seven months in 2024 (June to December), the aerators were pulled for service in mid-December as many components required repair and replacement.

We will keep you informed if the situation becomes critical. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience as we monitor this unusually timed influx of fish.
